Reel cables for drilling jumbo: Power transmission solution adapted to harsh conditions.
In engineering scenarios such as mining and tunnel excavation, the drilling jumbo, as a core drilling device, needs to operate flexibly in rugged tunnels and confined spaces. Its power and control rely on specialized reel cables to provide stable electricity. Unlike conventional operating environments, when the drilling jumbo is in use, the cable needs to move and coil frequently with the equipment, facing risks of rock abrasion, dust erosion, mechanical impact, and oil contamination. Ordinary cables cannot withstand such 'harsh conditions + high-frequency movements,' making them prone to damage and short circuits, which can lead to equipment failures. The reel cables specifically designed for drilling jumbos are created to overcome these challenges, and through structural and material optimization, they ensure long-term stable operation under extreme conditions.
1. Drilling jumbo operational characteristics: anchoring cable design requirements
Rock drilling jumbo operations exhibit three major characteristics, which determine the key performance requirements of the cable:
High-frequency dynamic winding
When the trolley is drilling, it needs to move forward and backward to adjust its position, and the cable needs to frequently "coil and release" with the reel, with several actions per minute, which places extremely high demands on the bending life of the cable; at the same time, during the drilling process, the trolley may experience vibrations due to uneven rock hardness, exacerbating internal stress on the cable. Ordinary cables are prone to conductor breakage and insulation cracking under repeated bending.
Harsh environments erode the worksite, and dust is widespread (such as rock powder generated by rock drilling). Dust can easily enter cable gaps, wearing down the insulation layer; ore and gravel may scratch the cable sheath, causing mechanical damage. In addition, lubricant and coolant used by the equipment can leak and easily contaminate cables, and some chemicals can corrode the sheath and insulation materials.
When a mechanically stressed complex trolley moves within the roadway, the cable may be squeezed by rocks and equipment components, bearing local pressure; when operating in a sloped roadway, the cable also needs to resist the tension generated by its own weight. If the tensile performance is insufficient, the conductor can easily be broken, causing a power supply interruption.
2. Core Structure of Special Reel Cable: Designed to Suit Working Conditions
To adapt to the harsh working conditions of drilling jumbo rigs, the specialized drum cable is structurally designed with targeted considerations from the inside out:
1. Conductor: Balances high flexibility and tensile strength
Material Selection: High-purity oxygen-free copper wire (purity ≥ 99.9%) or tinned copper wire (to enhance corrosion resistance) is used. Multiple fine copper wires (single wire diameter ≤ 0.15 mm) are twisted into small strands and then layered and re-twisted into a complete conductor. This structure allows the conductor to flexibly deform when bent, reducing stress concentration, preventing individual wire breakage, and ensuring efficient power transmission.
Enhanced design: High-strength aramid fibers or Kevlar fibers are added to the center of the conductor. These fibers have high tensile strength, do not participate in conductivity, but can withstand most of the tensile stress, preventing the conductor from being stretched or deformed due to long-term tension, improving the overall tensile performance of the cable, and can withstand several times the tensile force of ordinary cables.
2. Insulation layer: flexible insulation and wear-resistant protection
Material Properties: High-flexibility, wear-resistant insulating materials are selected, such as modified polyethylene (PE), thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). Modified PE and TPE have good elasticity, can withstand high-frequency bending, and reduce the risk of insulation layer cracking; XLPE, on the other hand, performs excellently in heat resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for high-temperature and oily working environments.
Thickness and Process: The insulation layer thickness is accurately designed based on the cable voltage level (about 0.5–1.0 mm for low-voltage power cables and about 0.2–0.5 mm for control signal cables), using high-precision extrusion technology to ensure uniform thickness, free of pinholes and bubbles, preventing insulation failure; at the same time, the surface of the insulation layer is smooth, reducing the friction coefficient with other components and minimizing wear.
3. Core Stranding and Filling: Stabilize structure, distribute stress
Stranding method: Multi-core cables use the 'symmetrical concentric layer stranding' process, in which the insulated cores are stranded in layers according to concentric circles, with an even number of cores in each layer and alternating stranding directions (e.g., inner layer clockwise, outer layer counterclockwise). This structure ensures that the cores experience uniform stress when the cable is bent, preventing 'birdcage deformation' caused by twisting and avoiding core compression and damage.
Filling material: Fill the gaps between the twisted core wires with flexible fiber fillers, such as polyester fiber ropes or polypropylene fibers. The filling serves three purposes: first, to fix the position of the core wires and prevent them from shifting during movement; second, to cushion stress, reducing friction and collision between the core wires when bending; third, to maintain the round shape of the cable core, laying the foundation for the uniform wrapping of subsequent shielding and sheath layers.
4. Shielding layer (configured as needed): anti-interference, ensures signal stability
For drilling rigs (such as intelligent drilling rigs) that transmit control signals and sensor data, cables need to have a shielding layer. A common structure is a 'double-layer shield':
Inner shielding: Using an aluminum-plastic composite tape longitudinally wrapped, the aluminum foil can effectively block external radiation interference (such as strong magnetic fields generated by equipment motors), and the plastic film acts as insulation to prevent the aluminum foil from contacting the core wire and causing a short circuit.
Outer Shielding: High-density tinned copper wire braiding (braiding coverage ≥90%) not only enhances anti-interference capability and absorbs conducted interference (such as crosstalk generated by the cable's own cores) but also provides a certain degree of tensile and wear resistance; the shielding layer is reliably grounded through a grounding lead, directing interference currents into the earth, ensuring accurate signal transmission.
5. Sheath: wear-resistant, weather-resistant, impact-resistant
Material Selection: The mainstream choice is high-elasticity polyether polyurethane (TPU), while in certain scenarios, modified polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or neoprene can be selected:
TPU sheath: Its wear resistance is 3-5 times that of ordinary rubber, has good elastic recovery, no permanent deformation after bending, resistant to oil and low temperatures (can withstand -40℃), suitable for high-frequency bending and oil-intensive drilling jumbo operations;
Modified PVC: lower cost, good weather resistance, suitable for outdoor normal temperature, low-frequency activity scenarios;
Neoprene rubber: excellent aging resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for high temperature and highly corrosive environments.
Structural Design:
Thickness Optimization: The conventional sheath thickness is about 1.2–2.0 mm. In areas prone to rock scratches and severe wear, it can be increased to 2.0–3.0 mm to enhance protection strength.
Surface treatment: Use a smooth surface to reduce the friction coefficient with drag chains and rocks; or a micro-textured surface to enhance slip resistance, preventing excessive cable sliding during movement and reducing the risk of wear.
Extrusion Process: Through the 'co-extrusion' or 'high-precision single extrusion' process, ensure that the sheath tightly wraps the inner structure, with no bubbles or seams, preventing dust, oil, and other contaminants from seeping into the cable core through gaps.
3. Performance Advantages: Meeting the Operational Needs of Drilling Jumbos
Ultra-long bending life
High-quality drum cables dedicated to rock drilling rigs have a dynamic bending lifespan of over 1 million times (tested according to international standards, such as IEC 60245 or VDE 0250), and some special models for high-frequency scenarios can even reach 5 million times, far exceeding ordinary cables (usually less than 100,000 times), making them suitable for long-term high-frequency coiling operations on rigs.
High wear resistance and impact resistance
TPU and other wear-resistant sheaths, combined with a reasonable structural design, can withstand rock scratches and gravel impacts. In environments with frequent dragging and friction, the sheath has a very low wear rate, effectively reducing cable failures caused by mechanical damage.
Excellent environmental adaptability
Oil-resistant, dustproof, resistant to acids and alkalis, and capable of withstanding high and low temperatures (-40℃ to 90℃ or even higher, depending on the material). It can maintain stable performance in harsh mining and tunnel environments, preventing insulation failure and sheath aging caused by environmental erosion.
Stable electrical performance
The conductor and insulation layer are optimally designed to ensure no heating or breakdown during high current transmission; the shielding layer effectively blocks electromagnetic interference, ensuring precise transmission of control signals and preventing issues such as deviations in drilling accuracy of the trolley or control failures.
4. Key points for selection: precise adaptation to trolley equipment
1. Consider the work environment
Environments with a lot of dust and sharp rocks: prioritize TPU thick-sheath, high-strength shielded cables;
High-temperature areas (such as near blasting points and molten lava zones): require heat-resistant XLPE insulated and neoprene sheathed cables;
Damp, waterlogged alleys: Waterproof and moisture-resistant cables should be selected, such as those with waterproof filling and sealed sheath structures.
2. Matching trolley parameters
Conductor cross-section: Selected according to the power and rated current of the trolley motor to ensure sufficient current-carrying capacity (for example, a 55 kW motor typically requires a 16–25 mm² conductor);
Bending radius: determined according to the diameter of the trolley drum to ensure that the cable is not damaged during winding (for small-diameter drums ≤50 cm, ultra-flexible cables are required, with a minimum bending radius of 6–8 times the cable's outer diameter);
Shielding requirements: If the trolley has control signal transmission, cables with a shielding layer must be selected, and the shielding effectiveness should be specified (e.g., shielding efficiency ≥ 95%).
3. Quality and Certification Considerations
Prefer products that are certified by CE, UL, or the domestic 3C certification, to ensure they meet safety and performance standards;
Require the supplier to provide bending fatigue test, wear resistance test, and environmental durability test reports to verify actual performance.
5. Maintenance and Care: Extending the Service Life of Cables
Regular appearance inspection
Before each shift, check whether the cable sheath is damaged or scratched and whether the shielding layer is exposed. If any problems are found, repair or replace them promptly to prevent the malfunction from worsening.
Cleaning and maintenance
Regularly wipe the surface of the cables with a clean damp cloth to remove dust and oil; for stubborn stains that are difficult to clean, use a special cleaning agent to avoid damaging the cable material.
Winding Management
Ensure the cable is wound evenly on the reel, avoiding tangling or overlapping; regularly check the reel drive mechanism to ensure uniform winding speed and reduce abnormal stress.
Storage Notice
Idle cables are neatly coiled and stored in a dry, ventilated environment without direct sunlight; for long-term storage, periodically energize to test performance.
In summary, the special drum cable for rock drilling rigs is a key component to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the equipment. Its design is closely centered around operational conditions, and by optimizing its structure and materials, it achieves stable power transmission in harsh environments. Proper selection and standardized maintenance can fully leverage the cable's performance advantages, reduce equipment failure rates, and improve engineering work efficiency.
