How to Choose Scraper Drag Cables?

Wheel Loader Tow Cable Selection Guide

When a loader operates in scenarios such as mines and infrastructure construction, the dragging cable must frequently withstand high-intensity pulling and stone impacts, as well as resist oil, dust, and extreme temperatures. The selection should focus on the core of 'durable and suitable for working conditions,' and through precise matching of materials and structure, frequent damage can be avoided.

1. First focus on core needs and clarify the direction of selection

The key usage characteristics of a loader dragging cables determine the focus of selection:

Resistance to strong dragging: When moving with equipment, the single drag distance often reaches 10-50 meters, needing to withstand a pulling force of 1000-3000 N, and also cope with start-stop impacts. The materials and structure need to have both toughness and tensile strength;

Protection against external damage: Construction site gravel can cause punctures, equipment may crush it, so the outer layer of the cable needs to be wear-resistant and puncture-resistant, while also preventing dust adhesion and oil penetration;

Temperature and environment resistance: Suitable for -30°C (winter outdoors) to above 60°C (summer exposure), avoiding cracking at low temperatures and softening at high temperatures, ensuring long-term stable operation.

2. Selection of Core Components: Focusing on 'Durability' and 'Compatibility'

1. Outer sheath: Preferably special wear-resistant PUR

The outer sheath is the cable's 'first line of defense,' and modified wear-resistant PUR (polyurethane) is suitable for the harsh conditions of wheel loaders:

The wear resistance is 5-8 times that of ordinary PVC, and it is not easily worn out when dragged against the ground or gravel.

Strong puncture resistance, can withstand compression and puncture from construction site gravel, preventing the internal wire core from being exposed;

The oil resistance level meets ISO 6722 standards, and it does not swell or deform when in contact with hydraulic oil or lubricating oil.

Temperature range -40℃ to 80℃, does not become brittle in winter low temperatures or soften in summer high temperatures, suitable for complex outdoor environments. It is recommended to give priority to the 'tear-resistant modified version' (tear strength ≥ 40kN/m) to prevent the sheath from cracking during dragging.

2. Conductor: Multi-stranded ultra-fine precision-twisted oxygen-free copper wire

The conductor needs to take both conductivity and fatigue resistance into account. IEC 60228 Class 6/7 multi-strand ultra-fine precision twisted oxygen-free copper wire is recommended:

Single wire diameter 0.1-0.2mm, produced by "layered reverse twisting" process, with flexibility over 30% higher than ordinary coarse copper wire, making it less likely to break the core during frequent dragging and bending;

Conductivity ≥98% IACS, meeting the power supply requirements of shovels (mostly high-power equipment over 100kW), reducing power supply instability caused by line losses;

Long-term use is less likely to cause 'aging and wire breakage,' and performance stability is stronger.

3. Reinforcement layer: essential tensile and torsional resistant structure

For the high traction and easily twisted working conditions of the loader, it is necessary to build in reinforcement layers to optimize performance:

Tensile layer: optional Kevlar fiber braided layer or galvanized steel wire braided layer. Kevlar fiber is lightweight (50% lighter than steel wire), with tensile strength ≥ 2000N, suitable for flexible dragging scenarios; Galvanized steel wire has stronger roll resistance and is suitable for construction sites frequently pressed by equipment. It is recommended to choose a thick zinc layer with a zinc layer thickness ≥10μm to prevent rust;

Anti-torsion design: The cable lay pitch is controlled at 8-10 times the outer diameter to prevent knotting and core misalignment during dragging, ensuring smooth retraction and deployment.

4. Insulation layer: Oil-resistant modified XLPE

The insulation layer needs to isolate the conductor and prevent short circuits. Oil-resistant modified XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) is the preferred choice:

Temperature range -40℃ to 105℃, more resistant to high and low temperatures than ordinary PE, and not prone to insulation failure under temperature fluctuations;

Excellent oil resistance, oil stains cannot penetrate or corrode, insulation resistance ≥10¹⁴ Ω·cm, not prone to short circuits with long-term use;

When paired with a PUR sheath, it can form 'double protection,' further enhancing the cable's environmental resistance. If there is large equipment near the loader generating electromagnetic interference, a tinned copper braided shield layer (coverage ≥80%) can be added to ensure stable power supply.

3. Refine configuration by scenarios to fit actual operations

Underground mine shoveling machine: Focus on puncture resistance and moisture resistance, recommended wear-resistant PUR sheath, Kevlar tensile layer, oil-resistant XLPE insulation;

Open-air infrastructure construction site shovel loader: Focus on high and low temperature resistance, crush resistance, using UV-resistant modified PUR sheath, galvanized steel wire tensile layer, and oil-resistant XLPE insulation;

Port / Logistics Shovel Loader: Needs to be resistant to salt spray and interference, optional salt spray-resistant PUR sheath, Kevlar tensile layer, oil-resistant XLPE insulation, tin-plated copper wire shielding layer.

4. Selection and Usage Precautions

Select conductor cross-section according to power: Calculate the current based on the power of the loader (for example, choose a conductor above 35mm² for a 100kW device) to avoid overheating and burning due to insufficient cross-section;

Recognize industrial drag-specific use: choose specialized cables that meet the GB/T 39560 standard, and do not select civilian PVC cables (which only last 1-2 months and are easily damaged);

Take protective measures during use: drag the cable along paths that avoid sharp gravel areas, and lay cable protection troughs if necessary; avoid pulling or yanking harshly when winding or unwinding, to reduce impact tension;

Regular inspection and maintenance: Check weekly whether the sheath is damaged or the tensile layer is exposed, and repair any problems promptly to extend the service life of the cable.

Through the above selection approach, it can be ensured that the cable dragged by the loader is suitable for harsh operating environments, reducing failures and replacement frequency, and ensuring stable equipment operation.
