European Cable Standards Implementation System

Published: 2025-08-08 10:44:57

The European Cable Standards Implementation System is mainly led by the European Commission for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), covering the formulation, release, implementation, and other aspects of standards, as detailed below:

Standards-setting organization: CENELEC was established in 1976, with the aim of coordinating electrical standards among countries and eliminating technical barriers in trade. Its members include national electrical associations from several European countries such as Austria, Belgium, and Denmark.

Standard type

European Standard (EN): According to the common obligations undertaken by participating countries, EN standards will grant the relevant national standards of a member country legal status, or withdraw the relevant standards of a certain country that are opposed to them. The national standards of member countries must be consistent with EN standards.

Harmonized Document (HD): The HD document has the same legal effect as European standards. The national standards of member countries should at least be harmonized with the HD standard and replace the relevant national standards of member states within the specified period.

Standard Implementation Requirements: CENELEC members are obligated to implement the CEN/CENELEC international agreement. Once a European standard is issued, all members must announce it according to the national standard level within 6 months, implement the European standard according to the national standard within 1 year, and abolish the original national standard that conflicts with the European standard within the following 5 years.

Standard Numbering Rules: European standard numbers are directly included in national standards of each country without change. For example, EN50306 in the UK, Germany, France, and other countries, the national standard numbers are BS EN50306, DIN EN50306, and NF EN50306, while HD documents are numbered separately. For European standards adapted from IEC standards, the first digit of the standard number is usually "6", and for example, IEC60811 corresponds to a European standard EN60811.

Related system: In the field of wires and cables, CENELEC has a HAR agreement. After verification by the institutions of member countries where wire and cable factories are located, they can add the national conformity mark (indicated by colored stripes, coordinated by VDE) and the ▽HAR▽ mark, allowing products to be universally recognized in 16 European countries.

Examples of specific standards: EN13501 is the European fire protection standard, where EN13501-6 is mainly used for evaluating cable fire protection performance. Using the Euroclass system, cable fire protection grades are divided into B2CA, CCA, etc., and also specifies smoke emission levels and other indicators. It is suitable for fields requiring fire safety such as construction and cable wiring.
